The teaching of mathematics at Great Coates is planned around the new national curriculum and will focus on mastery and fluency. There is a long term overview which specifies which strand will be taught at which point in the year and when ‘re-visits’ will be scheduled. Objectives are then identified in a medium term plan which also pinpoints opportunities for fluency. Short term plans will show that problem-solving is being incorporated in to each unit by the teacher. Problem solving will be shown through reasoning, communication and enquiry based problems as well as worded problems. At the front of each child’s book there will be a page where children record the facts they know by heart. These facts can then be used to support pupils when problem solving. There is an expectation that each class will undertake 15 minutes mental maths daily taught as a discreet time.
